The 4Rs in Action: how responsibility shapes our technology and vision

Responsibility remains a defining element of Tecniplast’s approach to supporting biomedical research. While concepts such as the 3Rs, 4Rs and broader frameworks continue to gain visibility across the industry, Tecniplast highlights that these principles have long been embedded in its operational and technological strategy.

The company emphasizes that its commitment goes beyond meeting regulatory standards. Instead, it focuses on integrating animal welfare, scientific quality, staff protection and resource efficiency into a single, mutually reinforcing system. In this context, Tecniplast adopts the 4Rs as a practical benchmark:

  • Refinement, through improved housing and reduced stress;
  • Reduction, enabled by robust, continuous data that support more efficient study designs;
  • Replacement, through technologies that contribute to better planning;
  • Responsibility, as an overarching mindset guiding all decisions.

A key example of this philosophy is the Digital Ventilated Cage (DVC®), which uses non-invasive sensors to continuously monitor animal activity and in-cage environmental conditions. This home-cage monitoring approach allows refinement to become measurable and actionable in day-to-day facility management.

Tecniplast also extends its responsibility-driven strategy beyond the animal room. Initiatives such as RE-Cage and internal plastics recycling programs demonstrate that sustainability can be integrated into industrial operations without compromising performance. At the same time, ergonomic solutions and automated systems for watering and washroom processes are designed to support staff and reduce operational strain.

The company’s long-standing dedication is also reflected at the industry level. Tecniplast was the first to formally support the 3R-RepRefRed Society, reinforcing a commitment that has shaped its development for many years.
