VISTA Symposium - A recap of this Innovative event

From 2nd of April to the 4th, Tecniplast hosted a dynamic and highly successful international event that brought together global leaders in laboratory animal science, facility management, automation, and sustainability. With an impressive lineup of expert speakers and a carefully curated program, the multi-day event sparked important conversations, shared valuable insights, and showcased cutting-edge technologies shaping the future of vivarium operations.

The event kicked off on April 1st with a warm Welcome Happy Hour at the prestigious Palace Hotel in Varese, setting the tone for the engaging days ahead. On April 2nd, participants gathered for an opening address and keynote speech by Markus Bürger of the Max Delbrück Center, followed by a transfer to Human Technopole in Milan, where Eugenio Fava welcomed the group. The day unfolded with compelling talks, including Jeetendra Eswaraka on automation in laboratory animal programs, Fabrizio Scorrano on integrated digital health colony management (DHCM) at Novartis, and Catriene Thuring discussing the journey and future of Digital Ventilated Cages (DVC). The afternoon concluded with insights from Raphael Doenlen on using machine learning to enhance animal welfare, before a networking dinner in Milan’s city center.

Day two was hands-on and focused on practical innovation. Attendees rotated through DVC workshops, followed by an automation session featuring presentations from Melanie Michaela Hierweger, Andrew Feltham, Paul Symonds, and Hunter Nezat, covering topics ranging from automation in animal facilities to cage wash optimization and key performance indicators. The day concluded with a relaxed dinner at the scenic Golf Club in Luvinate.

The final day, April 4th, was centered around sustainability, held at IWT. Roberto Crippa, Tecniplast’s Group Sustainability Director, opened the session, followed by Mike Wisnieski of AstraZeneca, Dan Diehl from AirCuity, and Robert Davis with Matt Sharp, who addressed sustainable sterilization techniques. The session wrapped up with closing remarks and transfer arrangements for attendees, with optional factory tours offered at Tecniplast and IWT.

With a diverse range of speakers from institutions such as Yale University, EPFL, AstraZeneca, Novartis, and Rutgers University, the event fostered invaluable cross-disciplinary dialogue. The enthusiastic participation and overwhelmingly positive feedback confirmed the event as a resounding success.

And who knows—after such a remarkable gathering, perhaps we’ll see a Part Two next year. Stay tuned!
