Tecniplast China at AFLAS 2025: Pioneering Innovation and Collaboration in Laboratory Animal Science

Jointly organised by the Asian Federation of Laboratory Animal Science Associations (AFLAS) and the Chinese Association for Laboratory Animal Sciences (CALAS), with Tecniplast China as a co-organiser, the 10th AFLAS Congress & 18th Academic Conference on Laboratory Animal Science and Technology of China was successfully held in Hangzhou from 21 to 24 October.

Bringing together the latest advancements and emerging trends in laboratory animal science, the event attracted over 1,000 researchers and professionals, including more than 100 leading experts and scholars from across Asia and around the world.

Under the theme “Laboratory Animal Science and Technology for Human Health,” Tecniplast China presented its innovative solutions and forward-thinking research initiatives, highlighting the company’s continuous commitment to driving scientific progress within the Chinese market.

01 | DVC® Workshop

On 21 October, Tecniplast China hosted a specialised workshop on the DVC® system, which drew over 30 distinguished experts from both China and abroad. Giorgio Rosati, Global Senior Product Manager at DIGILAB, delivered a comprehensive presentation highlighting the core advantages and innovative features of the Emerald DVC® system.

“The DVC® system enables high-precision, 24/7 continuous monitoring, allowing comprehensive tracking of mouse behaviour, food and water intake, and potential anomalies. Without disturbing the animals’ daily routines, researchers can access long-term, consistent, and accurate data—providing a robust foundation for scientific research.”

“Significant reduction in the frequency of cage changes, commonly between 40% and 60%, translating to lower operational costs through the conservation of resources like energy and supplies and a decrease in material needs and waste, such as bedding.”

“In essence, the DVC® system acts as a vigilant virtual assistant, particularly active at night, analysing animal activity and ensuring a safe environment for the animals through 24/7 monitoring.”

Guided by a strong commitment to sustainability, Tecniplast China continues to promote environmental responsibility. By reducing bedding and water consumption, lowering energy usage, and optimising cage-washing frequency, the DVC® system actively supports China’s “dual carbon” objectives. In addition, its ROI analysis tool demonstrates that the system not only offers a short payback period but also delivers a dual advantage in operational efficiency and environmental value.

02 | A Comprehensive Showcase of Digital and Intelligent Innovation

At the AFLAS exhibition area, Tecniplast China showcased a portfolio of innovative products that embody its vision of “intelligent, sustainable, and animal welfare–centred” research environments.

During the congress, Tecniplast China officially unveiled its latest-generation Air Handling Unit — Zephyr, a system that is redefining standards in design, connectivity, and intelligent automation. Engineered for today’s dynamic research facilities, Zephyr provides a cutting-edge solution that seamlessly integrates animal welfare, sustainability, and scalability within a single intelligent system.

Displayed alongside Zephyr was WaterWise, Tecniplast’s smart water management solution for animal facilities. WaterWise delivers a complete, efficient, and sustainable approach to water management, ensuring high-quality, reliable water supply while significantly reducing waste, costs, and environmental impact.

In addition, Tecniplast China presented a range of other advanced solutions, including ARIA CS48, OCEANUS, and UP&DOWN. Together, these innovations reflect the company’s core philosophy of efficiency, intelligence, and sustainability, offering a comprehensive vision for the future of laboratory animal facilities and underscoring Tecniplast China’s unwavering commitment to advancing intelligent, efficient, and environmentally responsible research environments.

At the AFLAS exhibition, Tecniplast China highlighted not only the global capabilities of a multinational enterprise but also its significant localisation achievements in China. Tecniplast China stands as both an innovative partner in global life sciences and GMP operations and a dedicated co-builder of China’s research ecosystem.

From establishing its Manufacturing Centre in China to collaborating with leading domestic universities and research institutions, Tecniplast China demonstrates its brand philosophy of “co-creating, co-researching, and co-growing” through concrete action.

03 | Tecniplast China Visits Zhejiang University

On the morning of 24 October, the Tecniplast China delegation, accompanied by selected clients, visited the Laboratory Animal Center of Zhejiang University. The visit aimed to facilitate the sharing of laboratory animal resources and research expertise, strengthen inter-institutional collaboration, and collectively advance the standards of laboratory animal science and animal welfare ethics in China.

Guided by the center’s leadership, the delegation toured the facility’s functional layout, which included:

  • Fourth floor: SPF breeding area
  • Third floor: SPF experimental zones for mice and rats
  • Second floor: Transgenic animal experimental platform, bio-clean areas, ABSL-2 laboratory, and behavioural research laboratories
  • First floor: Centralised cleaning area equipped with advanced Tecniplast devices, including ARCADIA, Atlantis, and bottle washers, alongside the animal drinking water preparation room and the fully integrated barrier facility monitoring system

The visit not only showcased the Laboratory Animal Center’s state-of-the-art infrastructure and rigorous management standards but also provided a valuable platform for domestic peers to exchange knowledge and best practices.

The 10th AFLAS Congress & 18th Academic Conference on Laboratory Animal Science and Technology of China successfully demonstrated the convergence of cutting-edge research, innovative technologies, and collaborative engagement in the field. Tecniplast China’s participation highlighted its dual commitment to global excellence and localised development, from pioneering digital and intelligent solutions such as the DVC® system, Zephyr AHU, and WaterWise, to fostering strategic collaborations with leading Chinese research institutions.

Through dedicated workshops, exhibitions, and on-site facility visits, Tecniplast China not only showcased its advanced technological capabilities but also reinforced its role as a partner in promoting scientific progress, operational efficiency, and sustainable research practices. By integrating innovation, animal welfare, and environmental responsibility, Tecniplast China continues to drive the development of intelligent, efficient, and sustainable laboratory animal research environments, paving the way for a more collaborative and forward-looking scientific ecosystem in China and beyond.
