How can technology improve Animal Facility Management and science performance? The answers from the International Digital Vivarium Forum

The First Annual International Digital Forum organized and hosted by Tecniplast S.p.A. in September 2019 was the first event of its kind where scientists, facility manager’s and in-vivo life science manufacturer’s openly presented data about home cage monitoring from cage/animal tracking to evaluate different behavioral repertoires in the home cage.

The 3 key take home messages were:

  • Animal welfare is mandatory to perform animal research and without having technologies that facilitate the communication between facility managers and scientist it is very difficult to have an objective evaluation
  • 24/7 tracking technologies allow us to see things that have previously remain undetected due to current experiments occurring when the animals generally sleep (during the day) or when pathology evolves over the long term and require continuous measurements (e.g. stroke, cancer)
  • Additional biomarkers/parameters should be defined in order to be able to contextualize the amount of data generated by such technologies.

All the presentations are now available at the link https://www.tecniplast.it/en/dvf_presentations.html where you can read abstracts and request the full documents.
