Interceptor: Environmental Microbiological Monitoring by Tecniplast

Interceptor represents a new frontier in monitoring the microbiological load of laboratory animals. It is the first accurate, animal free environmental microbiological monitoring system for IVCs.

The Interceptor provides a highly sensitive detection and collection system of contaminated dust particles. One of the key features is the method of removal of biological samples from the IVC, this is carried out in a contamination-free manner enabling the safe transfer of the sample to the laboratory. This system makes the Interceptor stand apart from other products available on the market today.

The product is simple, cheap, efficient and validated with Mouse Norovirus (MNV), a difficult microbiological agent to detect in the environment.

Interceptor consists of a two part system; a stainless steel frame that holds an irradiated cardboard folder containing the special sliding filter. INTERCEPTOR (patent pending) is the Tecniplast answer to the need of animal free microbiological monitoring.

This monitoring system can be retrofitted to Smart, Easy and Sky Flow air handling units and is well accepted by the main diagnostic laboratories performing PCR on rodent agents.

Interceptor has been successfully developed by Tecniplast in collaboration with the Helmholtz Zentrum in Munich who originated the idea using nucleic acids associated with particles in the exhaust air of IVC cage rack systems for microbiological monitoring and is protected by a Helmholtz patent.

Since 2010 an intensive research programme has been conducted at the Zentrum with the aim of identifying the most reliable methods of environmental microbiological monitoring of IVCs. Tecniplast was then chosen as the key partner for the technical aspects of the project. Multiple sampling devices were tested in order to define the most suitable sampling position. Different collection surfaces were also tested to optimize the sample quality for downstream applications. The result is a contamination-free sampling kit.
